Function is perfect with this modification and it reduces the repair cost by around £200! The cost of replacing these drives is very high, but again a generic drive can be used along with a genuine Apple external temperature sensor. On certain iMac models the Apple hard drive has a built in temperature sensor which is specific to that particular model. It is not necessary to use an Apple labelled drive however as a generic replacement of identical quality and functionality can be used with a much smaller price tag.
Should the inevitable failure of the drive occur to you, it is alarmingly expensive to replace it with an original Apple drive. The situation is not helped by ingress of dust into the extensive cooling system so a top tip is to have your iMac stripped and cleaned once a year. This heat is a big enemy of hard drives and will cause earlier failure than is normal. Use Time Machine or any of several disk-cloning apps, like SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner.A really common problem on iMacs unfortunately as a large amount of heat is generated inside that nice sleek aluminium housing. If your Fusion Drive’s SSD appears to be failing, ensure you have a complete backup of your Mac before you do anything else. IDGĭriveDx’s diagnostic shows a very not good situation. For comparison, I have a 2017 iMac with a Fusion Drive (a 28GB SSD and 1TB hard drive), and DriveDx reports it’s only consumed about 10 percent of its estimated lifetime of use after two years of daily use. He has a 2015 iMac and is a heavy user of image-editing software, and the better diagnostic packages agreed that his SSD had already worn to near-failure status after just four years. My colleague John recently wrote in and eventually ran four different disk diagnostics, because not all of them agreed initially. These reports can provide detail about the current wear state of your Fusion Drive SSD (or a regular full-disk one).
This category of software checks your drives on a schedule and alerts you the first time an error is noticed or a problem rises above a threshold. I recently reviewed DriveDx, but there are several other apps available, too. That’s why I recommend installing some form of drive-health monitoring software if you use a Fusion Drive.
